Since I know you will be missing me for the next few days, (yes I thought we would be off tomorrow all day and YES I think we may be out Wednesday too) I don't want you to be sad. I am attaching a Sway about severe weather. All you have to do is read the material, listen to the sound clips, play the video, AND take the quiz at the end. I will let your quiz grade REPLACE any formative you have so far. Yes, you can take it as many times as you would like.
Severe weather extra credit quiz has expired. Please stay tuned for additional extra credit to come.

We had a fun warm up today where students looked at the current weather and decide if school would be cancelled. They were VERY excited to find out that there will be no school tomorrow. Even though it is exciting to not go to school, we still have things to learn.... This is what I expect the week to look like. Today - We did a fun station activity were students created a Frayer model and compared their work with others. I think it was a great opportunity to review their work and think critically think about the content. Wednesday - We will complete a round the room activity where we will practice the water cycle. (It seems we are missing the fact that it is driven by the energy of the sun.) Thursday - We will complete a water cycle quiz so I can see what they are still missing. We will also begin an investigation to build a model of the water cycle. This will take us through Friday and possibly into next week. ALSO, During our grade level meeting today, the topic of student behavior came up. This is the time of year when our sweet 6th graders get more comfortable with their surroundings. They have made friends and have become very comfortable with their teachers. As educators, we are so excited to see them grow and come into their own. However, with this confidence, can come disrespect. Often they don’t mean to be disrespectful, it is just how it comes out. (Their filter and tone of voice for appropriate responses is not fully developed yet.) If possible, would you mind discussing their behavior and how to best communicate with teachers and other adults? Together we can support our students to become the best young adults they can be. - Mrs. NeSmith This week:
My intention was for students to finish their project on Friday and present Tuesday (yesterday). This did not happen. Over 50% of students were not finished so I gave them yesterday to complete the project and work on their Cornell notes, which are due today. However, I will not be in today and this really messes with our schedule. Therefore, students will be completing a graphic organizer today in class which I will be taking it for a grade. I was not expecting to not be in today. I did not bring home the work students turning in Friday or yesterday to grade while I am home. I will get those graded and in the grade book as soon as possible. I am hopeful that today will be the last day I am out for some time. Students have been working hard to create a weather reports. They are working with their partners to create a script that they will be video taping in front of the green screen. They will be working with green screen apps to layer maps and fronts into their video. So far students have had a great time. At the end of the project, students will peer assess the contribution of classmates to ensure all participants are working equally. I am hopeful that reports can be viewed on Thursday, but realistically it will be closer to Tuesday as I will not be at school on Friday. Below is a quick quiz if students would like to practice more. We have started our weather unit and the kids have really been working hard. I have started a few new strategies after break. Note taking: We have spent a great deal of time reading and discussing what topics are important and what areas should be highlighted in the text. We have moved on to the next step, Cornell Notes. Some students have experience with these notes but most do not. I am providing templates for them to complete as a group. So far they have been working really well, the conversations, and learning are wonderful. Students will be placing notes in their two pocket folder. They may want to transition to a 3-ring binder so they can keep everything in 1 place. Completely up to them (and you). Homework: Most students did not finish the graphic organizer today. They will need to use the attached information to complete the organizer. They will be using it for the weather project that I will introduce tomorrow. I will take it for a grade. Project: Students will be working in a group to produce a weather forecast. They will be writing a script and recording it in front of a green screen. They will be demonstrating their understanding of how air masses affect weather. The project should take us through the end of next week.
It is important to me that we are all able to learn in the best way possible. Click on the button below to answer the quick survey.
Follow the directions. When you are done, pass the iPad on to another student. -Mrs. NeSmith |
