I have watched AND responded to all of your weathering and erosion Flipgrids. You all did a great job. It was awesome to see you!
As I watched your videos, I realized we have an opportunity for authentic learning. If you found and addressed a particular type of erosion at your house, I will let you create a plan / solution to stop that erosion. This project would be instead of the soil projects. (See your Flipgrid comments). However, I will extend that offer to anyone else who may see there is erosion at their house that needs to be fixed. Please submit the plan of how you would fix the problem, materials needed, and a drawing the represents the finished product. Your project must be approved by me!mEmail me to approve your project idea PRIOR TO BEGINNING. [email protected] Today will wrap up soil. I hope that you understand how IMPORTANT it is to our earth and our survival. It is often taken for granted. Today's lesson will have 3 steps Step 1 Go to the online textbook. I have assigned an interactive activity. Step 2 Complete the quiz on soil and soil conservation. You can take the quiz multiple times. The idea is to LEARN. Please use your text, All About Soil video, and the soil conservation article. Step 3 Watch the quick video. When you are done you will complete a soil project. You have 2 options - you will choose 1 to complete: 1 - create a soil horizon model 2 - control erosion around the Griffin Garden Look at the documents below. These graphic organizers are to help you with the project. Don't forget to answer the prompts in the directions. Pick a project and have fun. How to turn in your project... I love pictures. You can email me or you can show your project in Flipgrid. (This is my favorite so I can see all your beautiful faces). I am making grid for all my classes. When you are ready to turn it in, click the button below. Assignment options: Option 1 - Soil Horizon Model Option 2 - Erosion at Griffin Garden
Project directions - Choose 1
I hope you were able to see how important soil is. In this lesson we will discuss what happens if we do not protect our soil. Remember how Providence Canyon was formed? It was from poor farming practices. Soil conservation is a method to stop erosion. All of these concepts are very closely related. Step 1 Log on to MackinVIA. I have assigned a BrainPop video on soil AND the graded quiz. I am noticing that only about 1/4 (25% - SUPER SAD FACE ☹) are doing the BrainPop assignments. Please do them! They are super easy and give you great information. Plus, an easy grade! Step 2 Read the information about Soil Conservation. You do not have to turn in the Chapter Summary. However, make sure you can answer the questions as you will need to for tomorrows lesson. Step 3 Watch the videos on the Dust Bowl. This was the ultimate of poor farming practices. As you watch, think about a few things: 1. What was the time like? What was happening in our country during this time period? 2. Think about what else you have learned. A huge 5th grade standard is the Great Depression. How did was the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl connected? 3. What are some different choices that could have been made to change the Dust Bowl? Wow, can you believe that we are on our 6th week of on line learning? You are doing amazing! I am so proud of you and how hard you are working. Thank you for continuing to value your learning. This session will have 3 steps in this session. Step 1 The first is a Q&A with Mrs. Sprinkle. She has built a garden in her backyard and we were really interested in the process. Below is a link to the Q&A. She has SO much information that we can all learn from. Click the button to watch our ZOOM session with Mrs. Sprinkle. Step 2 Read about soil formation. You have 2 options for reading. 1. If you would like to read from the book, it is pages 428 - 435. 2. If you would like to read digitally, you have the pages assigned on the online textbook. Step 3 Watch the video 'All About Soil'. This is an AWESOME video giving you so much information. We don't think much about soil. It is just something that is always there. But it is one of our most precious resources. It is very important to know how to protect it. There is a viewing guide attached. You can answer the questions on another sheet of paper or download the file in Word and type directly into the worksheet. NOTE: you will probably need to view the video more than once to get all the answers. Remember you can pause the video whenever you need to. This information is for you, you do NOT need to turn it in BUT you are still responsible for the information. Option 1 - Download and write directly into the form
Option 2 - write answers on another sheet of paper Tomorrow Don't forget - tomorrow is our ZOOM sessions @ 10 and Noon. Stop by - I miss you! This Friday we wanted to share some love with you. This is a weird time and you all have been working hard to continue to learn. Please continue to work and learn. As I have said before, you get out of something what you put into it. Always do your best, the only person who suffers it you don't is YOU! I miss you like CRAZZZY!!!! (BTW - Kahoot! leader board is the same.....) Wow. We have new winners on the leader board. The race is getting CRAZZZZY!
