CER Revision-Yesterday and today we discussed the student's CER papers at length. I am allowing all students below a 90 to revise. I have instructed students to staple the revision to the original paper and turn it in by the beginning of class on Friday. No late revisions will be allowed. Quiz Retake-We also took a water distribution quiz. Some students did well, however, some did not. I have placed a Power Point presentation as well as 2 videos in the Unit 4 - Water. Retakes will be Wednesday and Thursday. - Hover over 'More...' - Science Units - Unit 4 - Water

8I hope you all have had a restful break. We have a lot of things going on next week. All classes will have a mock writing assignment and we will be on a block schedule. (see below) I personally LOVE a block schedule because we have so much time to really get into the content. We will be reviewing the proportions of water on earth and beginning the ocean and ocean features. I would like to give a little quiz over the proportions of water just to make sure students are not confused before me move on. We will also be plotting the ocean floor incorporating math and science. Also, I would like to go over the CER summative writing assignments. Students did pretty good but there is some confusion about there is scientific evidence. Monday - Tuesday: Water distribution quiz. CER review, revise if below 80%. Read text and complete Cornell Notes. Wednesday - Thursday: Finish Cornell Notes and plot the ocean activity (for a grade) Friday: Why is the ocean salty reading and comprehension activity (for a grade)
I will be closing the chance to complete the extra credit assignment on Friday. If you plan on taking advantage of the quiz, please do so BEFORE Friday at midnight.
This week we will be delving into where water is located and how much we actually have to use. I am hoping to reveal how important it is for us to conserve this valuable natural resource. Monday - We will complete a graphic organizer showing where water is located and answer some basic questions about how much water students actually use. Tuesday & Wednesday - We will begin a 2 day investigation on how much water is actually available to use. Thursday & Friday - We will investigate the Tri-State Water wars that affect Georgia, Alabama, and Florida. We will discuss the legality issues as well as the environmental and economical impacts. Below are documents that we will be using in class today.
We have been working hard on the water cycle. Tomorrow, we will be testing over the topic. However, this test will look different than tests in the past. I have added long response questions on past tests and students have been doing much better. This test will be all long response. Students will be constructing a CER (Claim, evidence, reasoning) answer to a question regarding the water cycle. We spent the entire class period today going over CER and comparing it to RACE strategies that students use in ELA (it is basically the same thing...). We worked as a class and students got to practice. I am attaching the article in case they need to continue to work at home. If I didn't see a sample of their work in class, I asked them to finish it at home so I an quickly go over it tomorrow before the test. (I want to make sure they are on the right path). You may either open the Word doc or a link to the online article.
Students have been doing an AMAZING job making water cycle models. They have designed and constructed wonderful working models. Tomorrow they will finish their write up and collect data and observations from other classes. They will use this data to write a CER on Thursday. On Friday we will begin to the break down the water on earth's surface.
Students worked on a proposal to create a water cycle today in class and I asked them to finish it as homework. However, I have decided that I would like them to complete the proposal in class. I would prefer being available to support them rather than them struggling at home.
Next week we will be finishing up the water cycle and moving on to all the water on earth. We will be using A LOT of water. A LOT of water = A LOT of spilling. I would appreciate paper towel donations!!! Thank you in advance. - Mrs. NeSmith |
