On Friday, November 2, We will be taking our Unit 2 Post-test. The test will cover Moon Phases, Eclipses, Seasons and Tides. Students will receive a study guide next week.
Please check Parent Vue. All missing work is added into the grade book. There are a number of missing assignments. I have a total of 24 with NO NAMES. Please have your students look in the 'No Name' bin for their work. Due to missing assignments, many students are doing poorly.
I would like to thank all of you! First, I have never been showered with SO many Oreo's. In the past students would share cookies. However, this year I has so many donations all students had their own moon phases (and 4 cookies). They had a great time and applied what we had learned about moon phases. Second, thank you for everyone who met during conference week. It was a pleasure to meet you and sit down to talk about your awesome kids. (Yes, I am truly enjoying all my student this year!)
What's coming up: We have been learning about tides and seasons. This is always a difficult unit because it is so abstract. We will continue learning by completing a station lab next week. This will be a great opportunity for students to practice time regulation. (Often not their strength...) Homework: This week has been really odd due to early release. I have seen my classes every other day. Monday- Students should have read or finished reading pages 116 - 122 and complete the lesson review on page 123. Also, Several students were allowed complete a packet to earn points back on our last test. It is due MONDAY at the LATEST! I will not accept the packet after Monday. Today we had a great time learning about hurricanes. As Micheal made its way through Florida and Georgia, we had a unique opportunity to study the impacts hurricanes have on coastal areas. At the end of class, students were asked to write a note of encouragement to residents at one of the following areas: Mexico Beach, Panama City, or Saint George Island. I am attaching the Power Point that includes the writing prompt.
On Wednesday, 10/10, each Science class will be taking their Moon Phases test. This test will be all multiple choice and will include diagrams and information on the phases of the moon. Students have diagrams in their notebooks and their Oreo Lab to use as studying materials.I have had to assign some homework this weekend. I don't like to make things due over the weekend, but we are behind and I want to make sure they are ready for the test on Wednesday.
Students need to read pages 134-135 in the working text and complete the Unit 2 - Lesson 2 Review on page 137. We will grade it on Monday. Project revisions: Periods 1 and 6 can revise their projects if they did not score an 80 or better. It will be due on Monday. This is a firm date. I will not accept revisions past Monday. Periods 2 and 5 will receive their projects on Monday and will have until Wednesday turn their revisions in. This week we are learning about the phases of the moon. Even though this was taught in elementary school, we are going into much more detail. They are doing better but they are struggling. I have decided to move the lab to Monday and test on Wednesday. I am hoping this will give them the time they need to grasp the topic. Also, I am encouraging students to go outside and look at the moon. I am assigning homework over the weekend to actually view the moon and illustrate how it is changing. This will be fun for students to see a Earth Science in action. They should be able to tell you how it will change.
Next weeks upcoming assignments: Wednesday: Vocabulary and Moon Phases / eclipse test EVERY STUDENT will receive a complete picture package to take home and show their parents. Parents will then do the following (instructions are included on every portrait package/envelope):
Payments and/or portrait envelopes are returned by this Friday, October 5! .We have started a new unit on moon phases and seasons. With new units comes fun labs. We are in need of lots of OREO cookies. If you are able to donate cookies, please send them in with your student by Wednesday.
